Barbell Weights: The World's Most Loved Gym Equipment?
And one of the most useful pieces of body building equipment you can own!
Even if you are new to the world of gyms, fitness, and gym equipment, it’s very likely that upon entering the gym, you recognize the barbell weights. This piece of gym equipment finds its history among the ancient Greeks, who believed in strength training and that muscles must be used and developed or else they will waste away. Many Greek gods and heroes are known for their superior strength and muscles, a reflection of these beliefs.
One of the first barbells is said to have had hollow globes that could be filled with sand, rocks, or other heavy objects. Through the centuries, as the popularity of the barbell steadily grew, the design and technology of the equipment changed as well. By the end of the 19th century, plate-loading barbells which are the kind used today had been developed. Along with this came the development of dumbell weights and other types of barbell weights.
Used in weight training, strength training, weightlifting and/or powerlifting, barbells became incredibly popular in the 1980s after Hollywood glamorized the idea and image of the muscle-bound man using actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger in their hit movies. Terms like “beef up” and “pump iron” became part of everyday conversation. It was also during this decade, and the succeeding 1990s that barbells became part and parcel of gyms and fitness routines.
Though many wrote this off to be a “trend”, they were proven wrong. Barbells had lasting-power in terms of popularity among gym goers, and this is probably because of the many health benefits those who use barbells enjoy. Apart from the obvious benefits, which include strengthening of the skeletal muscles and toning or trimming of the muscles of excess fat, barbells can also help strengthen the lungs, heart, and bones because of the effort exerted by the body.
Weight training with barbells can also help boost daily energy, making you feel stronger and fit. It also strengthens your back, something you’ll be thankful for when you’re older, and it can also alleviate body aches and pains because the body actively repairs itself. Finally, and perhaps surprisingly to many, lifting barbells also strengthens your mind and promotes a great sense of discipline in a person.
So, the next time you walk into a gym; don’t take the barbell weights for granted. Not only do they have an unexpectedly interesting and long history, but it can also do wonders for you and your health. Who knows? It may be just the thing you need!
